Elyria, OH, December 21, 2015‑ The Community Foundation of Lorain County has announced grants totaling $810,767 in support of 35 projects around the county that will contribute to numerous programs and services benefiting Lorain County residents.
General, competitive grants ranging from $2,650 to $70,000 were awarded in support of projects in five program areas: Arts and Culture, Civic Affairs, Education, Health, and Social Services.
The largest grant, $70,000, was awarded to Blessing House for general operating support and the purchase of a full-size van with features necessary to transport children with special needs. Since 2005, Blessing House (BH) has provided crisis care for children up to 12 years of age, while their families dealt with emergencies.
Recipients include Invent Now, Inc. which was awarded a $49,900 for two 2016 Camp Invention programs in Lorain County serving a total of 220 students at Clearview Schools and Elyria City Schools. Camp Invention is a weeklong science and math enrichment summer program for children in grades 1 – 6. The Community Foundation has supported Camp Invention at Clearview Schools since 2013.
A series of grants were made to help spur economic development in Lorain County’s Main Street communities. Heritage Ohio, Inc. was awarded $8,100 to host a workshop on sponsorship to help Lorain County non-profits work with businesses. Created in 2002, Heritage Ohio is a non-profit organization serving as Ohio’s partner with the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the National Main Street Center, which oversees the trademarked National Main Street Program. Grants from $5,500 to $18,995 were also awarded to Main Street Amherst, Main Street Wellington, and Oberlin Business Partnership to support their continued certification and participation in the National Main Street Program and for travel to trainings, networking meetings, and a three-day conference in Columbus.
Founded in 1980, the Community Foundation of Lorain County is made up of more than 570 endowed Funds valued at approximately $114 million dollars.
