Three Grants for Lorain City Schools
Find Your Fire ‑ $1,996
The Find Your Fire program seeks to engage 30 young women at Lorain High School in a one-day self-awareness retreat to be held at Common Ground in Oberlin. It would serve as an orientation event for the girls to participate in an upcoming mentoring program at Lorain High School. Find Your Fire will provide participants a sense of belonging, improve self-image, and strengthen leadership skills.
New Beginnings ‑ $1,500
The New Beginnings Academy (NBA) is Lorain City School District’s alternative school serving students in grades 7‑12. A girls group meets weekly that teaches life skills and social-emotional well‑being. The grant will purchase t-shirts and cover transportation costs for field trips to area colleges for the girls group that will expand their visions of possible career opportunities.
YogaEd ‑ $1,500
YogaEd is a proposed program for a five-week after-school yoga class in Southview Middle School for up to 20 students (boys and girls). The class will teach students how to do yoga and address topics of self-esteem, conflict resolution, body image, and mental focus.
Grant Provides Access to Technology and Job Search Skills for Single Mothers
A $2,000 grant will support a Grafton-Midview Public Library program for single mothers and their children residing in the Colonial Oaks Mobile Home Park in Elyria, an area within the Library’s service district. Transportation and unaffordability of internet service were cited as barriers by many residents in this community. The program would take place onsite at Colonial Oaks. Children of the participants will meet with a librarian for child-focused activities while the mothers would work with an additional librarian to learn job-searching skills, inexpensive meal prep, and technology education. The grant will purchase mobile hot spots and equipment to provide temporary use of Wi-Fi in a small vicinity.
Camp Programs $5,000
The Women’s Fund supports multiple camp programs throughout Lorain County serving a diverse population of youth. Camp I.D.E.A.S. will receive a $2,000 grant for its summer learning camp for children with special needs from pre-K to high school. Participating school districts (Amherst, Avon, Elyria, Oberlin, and Wellington) refer their students to the camp. In 2017, 125 children participated.
A $2,000 grant will support a mini-camp summer program for Youth Challenge. The camp serves participants ages 4-10 with physical disabilities such as spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, and vision and/or hearing impairments. Transportation is provided for participants by Youth Challenge to and from the camps, to be held at an accessible location in Oberlin or Amherst.
A $1,000 grant to Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio will support Girl Scout Camperships for youth in Lorain County, Camperships are scholarships that allow girls from low-income families to enroll in the Girl Scout experience.
