Providing Shelter for the Vulnerable

Elyria, OH-January 27, 2021

The Board of Directors of the Community Foundation of Lorain County approved an emergency grant of $75K to Neighborhood Alliance for hotel vouchers and to hire a case manager to work exclusively with the homeless.

The Community Foundation strives to be responsive to the needs of the community. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the CDC and the Lorain County Health Department recommend we observe safe social distances. Local homeless shelters must comply with the state rules on congregate settings, reducing their capacity by at least 50%. Many agencies have paid for hotel vouchers to accommodate the homeless to provide refuge during these cold months.

“Neighborhood Alliance is deeply appreciative of the generosity of the Community Foundation of Lorain County. These funds will provide support for additional case management services and emergency assistance to help those experiencing homelessness in Lorain County,” says Alicia Foss, President & Chief Executive Officer of Neighborhood Alliance. The pandemic’s economic impact has closed businesses and led to increased unemployment, evictions, and rising numbers of homeless people seeking emergency housing and case management services through social service providers. Foss says, “One of our most significant challenges right now is to provide shelter to those experiencing homelessness, in larger numbers than ever before, and help everyone stay safe from Covid-19 while seeking long-term housing options.” The number of calls for emergency shelter in October 2020 increased more than 900% compared to the previous year.

“As partner agencies pull together to navigate an increase in homelessness and a decrease in available resources, like cold weather warming centers, we are grateful for supportive partners who see the needs of our community and respond,” says Foss.
