Our Guiding Light

Welcome – an inviting expression that makes me feel as though I am home whenever and wherever I hear it – or see it.  The Lorain Lighthouse (pictured below) has welcomed boaters and sailors safely home for decades, as well as serving as a guidepost for navigation, much as our new Strategic Plan will serve as a guiding light for your Community Foundation.  We are so fortunate to be part of such a welcoming community!  This month, we welcome our newest staff member – one who has been a part of this community for many years, serving as president of his local school board.  We are excited to welcome Jim Stobe as our new Chief Financial Officer while we extend warm wishes to Holly and her family as they transition to their new community in Florida.

We also welcome new Youth Fund members this weekend to begin discussing their priorities for the coming school year.  Our first meeting is scheduled for this Sunday afternoon, August 25th.  Our youth are so active that it actually turns out that Sunday afternoon best fits with high school students’ schedules.  Our Youth Fund membership still has room for one or two more members; please consider encouraging a high school student you may know who has an interest in philanthropy or supporting community needs.   A Youth Fund application is attached to this letter for you to share.  The application serves as an invitation to have them join us this Sunday afternoon for our first meeting.  Last year the Youth Fund distributed over twenty thousand dollars in grants to Lorain County nonprofit organizations that help young people.

Finally, while we are enjoying these later days of summer, we have a great event coming up in September.  Fast on the heels of Labor Day – specifically, Thursday, September 5 – we are hosting all community nonprofit (I often refer to them as “for purpose”) organizations at Lorain County Community College.  The purpose of the meeting is to share optimal strategies and best practices for Boards of Trustees at nonprofits.  If you are associated with any such organization, or if you are merely interested in the role of a board in nonprofit organizations, please join us as we continue to develop ways to support all of our community partners here in our welcoming home.
