“We don’t have to do all of it alone. We were never meant to.” ― Brené Brown, Rising Strong: The Reckoning. The Rumble. The Revolution.
If you have been paying even a little attention to the news over the last year or so, chances are you have read about the increasing concern about the growing mental health crisis in our youth. The ongoing challenges of the pandemic combined with the pressures faced by our young people are cause for concern. However, we know that the mental health crisis is not limited to just young people. Over the last two years, people of all ages have experienced increased isolation, anxiety, and depression. While this issue is more prevalent, the stigma around mental illness remains. We all must help break down the stigma of mental illness and depression so that our community thrives. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and I encourage you to take the time to learn more about the resources available and reach out to friends and family who may be struggling.
Issues like mental health that have such a broad reach and impact can sometimes feel insurmountable, but we have tools and resources available right here in Lorain County that can make a difference. NAMI, MHARS Lorain County, The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, Lorain Health and Dentistry, Mercy Moms, The Nord Center, Effective Leadership Academy, and El Centro are just a few organizations and agencies that provide counseling, mentoring, and other mental health services to all members of our community. You can support the work of these vital organizations through the Community Foundation and not just on Connect to a Cause in September. Our incredibly engaged Youth Fund is also working to tackle mental health challenges for young people. Another way to contribute to this effort is by joining the conversation and participating in the Lorain County Community Health Needs Assessment. The assessment will provide essential data best to align resources with the needs of our community, and more participation helps ensure that the results more accurately reflect community priorities.
Finally, I hope you can join us for our 2022 Annual Meeting featuring our Youth and Education Community Celebration on Wednesday, June 15th from 11 am to 1 pm at the Elyria Performing Arts Center. We will be celebrating educators and non-profit organizations positively impacting Lorain County youth. We will have a special appearance and message from our youth and Lorain County’s National Teacher of the year, Mr. Kurt Russell. Register here.
I look forward to seeing you there.
Be well,
Cindy
