“The horizon leans forward, Offering you space to place new steps of change.”

Maya Angelou, On the Pulse of Morning

Winter in Northeast Ohio can be challenging to say the least. The cold, gray skies and the quiet after the holiday season can be disorienting. Rest, go slow, reset, and recover. Setting intentions rather than resolutions can be helpful in shifting our mindsets to what is possible. What is your intention for 2024? Mine is to adopt a mindset of growth – exploring ways I can continue to grow during this quiet time of the year.  The solstice provides us the season of renewal and the power of kindness.  How can your presence make an impact in our community?

Even while this is a season of rest, there are plenty of opportunities to get out in the community and connect with friends and neighbors. Why not try yoga or meditation? Join NAMI and their yoga offerings in our community on January 30th. Find a friend to take a walk at Splash Zone or Prospect Community Center. Did you know that the Metro Parks has an annual garage sale the weekend of January 27th? If you are cleaning out closets this winter, take advantage of this sale to get clutter out of your home!

There are just a few days left before the deadline for the Toni Morrison Essay Contest for Young People. If you have a student in your life, encourage them to submit an essay. This is a unique opportunity to engage our young people with the prose of our hometown hero, and we are excited to read the incredible submissions in advance of our annual Toni Morrison Scholars Celebration on February 18, which is also Toni Morrison Day.

Finally, our Scholarship Committee Tea is coming up on February 13, we would love for you to join us and learn more about the inspiring work of this dedicated committee and how you can be a part of it. Create an intention to meet new friends and neighbors this year. Check out our upcoming events and volunteer opportunities here.

Have a peaceful day.  And of course, Happy Lunar New Year!
