February 25′ CEO Blog
“The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members, a heart of grace, and a soul generated by love.”
– Coretta Scott King
February is often called the month of love—but it’s about more than just Valentine’s Day, chocolates, and flowers. It’s also about love for our community, neighbors, and the causes that matter most to us. I was recently reminded of this at Oberlin’s Neighbor Night, where more than 20 residents came together to support one another. That same community spirit was displayed at Leadership Lorain’s annual Difference Makers Gala, where four outstanding leaders and an organization were honored for their selfless contributions. Congratulations to Dolores Baker, Alicia Foss, Joan Perch, Chase Farris, and Good Knights on this well-deserved recognition!
Our community has also been buzzing with activity during Black History Month. The African American Community Fund hosted a high-energy Black History Trivia Night, bringing people together to celebrate and learn about Black history in an engaging way. We also want to congratulate our 2025 Toni Morrison Essay Contest winners, whose powerful reflections honored the legacy of one of Lorain’s greatest literary icons. The Community Foundation of Lorain County, in partnership with the Lorain Public Library System, Lorain Historical Society, Oberlin Public Library, and Oberlin Heritage Center, is proud to be part of The Big Read initiative, a community-wide effort inspired by Morrison’s Beloved. This collaboration brings months of dynamic programming to celebrate literature, history, and community connections. Learn more about The Big Read Initiative.
Did you set a New Year’s resolution to get more involved in the community? It’s not too late, and now is the perfect time! Explore VolunteerConnect to find a volunteer opportunity that aligns with your interests. In partnership with Leadership Lorain County, Nordson Corporation, and LorainCounty.com, this platform connects community members with non-profits needing support. Since its launch last year, nearly 150 volunteer matches have been made!
Looking for a one-stop hub to share or discover local events? LorainCounty.com has you covered. Thank you to Ed and his team for managing the site and to Leadership Lorain County for championing this much-needed community resource.
As the cold winter months settle in, many of us find comfort in staying indoors—and you’re not alone. One of my favorite books to revisit this time of year is Wintering by Katherine May. She beautifully explores the power of rest, recuperation, and embracing stillness during what can feel like a lonely season.
How do you take time to rest, reflect, and recharge? Are there places in our community that bring you solace? Perhaps it’s the library, a peaceful walk in the park, your place of worship, or a welcoming community center. We would love to hear where you find comfort and connection this season.
Wishing you warmth, reflection, and moments of peace in the weeks ahead.
Warmly,
Cindy
