Youth Fund Serves Meal at Salvation Army
Ethan Glor, Youth Fund Member
On January 13, 2007, the Youth Fund of The Community Foundation of Lorain County visited the Elyria Salvation Army to help serve their daily hot meal. While we were disappointed to find out that we would not be cooking the meal, all of us were excited because that night’s dinner was donated by Smokey Bones and consisted of ribs and potatoes. They put us to work, and we rolled silverware, set tables, and washed trays. The Salvation Army had just completed a coat drive so a few of us went to distribute coats to the families that came for dinner. When people began to come in we filled plates with ribs, broccoli, and potatoes. As they came through the line to get their food, we all watched their faces glow when they saw the generously donated hot meal they were about to eat. But, what was better than seeing how happy the people were or hearing their thanks for the meal, was being able to talk with them and hear their stories. One man let Liz, President of the Youth Fund, look after his child for a little bit and told us about how his son was going to go to Ohio State on a Basketball scholarship and then play for the Cleveland Cavaliers. I was able to talk to a struggling artist who just so happened visited my hometown of Wellington frequently to see friends. We talked about the town, and I found out that he used to sell his artwork to a restaurant in Wellington that my family ate at regularly. When the dinner was finished, and everything was just about cleaned up, we all sat down, ate ribs and discussed what we thought about that day. While everyone had a different favorite part of the day the common theme was that everybody had a great time, and everyone wanted to do it again.
