Foundation Approves $657,207 in Grants

Neighborhood House Association has served those most in need in Lorain County since 1927. Today, the Board of Directors of The Community Foundation of Greater Lorain County approved $657,207 in grants to local nonprofit agencies with $35,000 going to Neighborhood House for the purchase of a new hot food delivery truck. With the new, high-tech Hot Shot Truck, Neighborhood House will be able to increase the number of elderly and disabled individuals it provides hot meals to across Lorain County from around 500 to 700 or more per day. “Neighborhood House is one of Lorain County’s most trusted and dependable nonprofit agencies,” said Brian Frederick, Foundation President/CEO. “Our board was happy to help them in their mission to help meet the most basic of human needs while preserving the dignity of their clients.”
The Community Foundation of Lorain County makes grants in 5 giving areas: Arts and Culture, Education, Community Building, Health, and Human Services. Neighborhood House was just one agency that received a grant in the area of Human Services. Others include:
American Red Cross, Lorain County Chapter $10,000 for disaster relief Blessing House $25,000 for the children’s crisis care facility Boys & Girls Clubs of Lorain County $35,000 for a teen program expansion Conflict Resolution of the West Shore $21,000 for resources for violence prevention El Centro de Servicios Sociales, Inc. $25,000 for general operating support Gathering Hope House $17,126 for GED tutoring, nutrition & fitness program Linden School $2,000 for materials to enhance learning Lorain Co. Alcohol & Drug Abuse Services $37,058 for vocational case management Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless $5,000 for community voice mail Pathways Counseling & Growth Center $20,000 challenge grant for project expansion YMCA of Vermilion $15,000 to support youth and families
In the area of Arts and Culture, a total of $88,025 was awarded to the following organizations: Baldwin-Wallace Collage $5,025 for conservatory outreach summer programs CityMusic Cleveland, Inc. $5,000 for the 2006-7 season in Elyria Cleveland Opera $12,000 for Music! Words! Opera! Firelands Association for the Visual Arts $15,000 for general operating support Lorain County Historical Society $16,000 for community education outreach MAD Factory $15,000 for theatre programs for youth Young Audiences of Greater Cleveland $20,000 for Lorain County Exceptional Arts programming
The following organizations received grants in the area of Community Building with a total of $82,000 being distributed: Direct Action for Central Lorain CDC $35,000 for 2007 community development strategy Ideastream $10,000 for in-depth coverage of health & education Lorain County Heritage, Inc. $7,000 for the Lorain County Beautiful Awards South Elyria Neighborhood Dev. Corp. $20,000 for neighborhood revitalization Western Reserve Land Conservancy $10,000 for a regional approach to land protection
The Community Foundation approved $78,698 in grants in the area of Education to the following local organizations: Cleveland Scholarship Programs $25,000 for Lorain County advisory services Educational Service Center of Lorain County $3,300 for Lorain County high school gifted programs Junior Achievement of Lorain County $20,000 for general operating support Midview Board of Education $6,798 for technology literacy National Inventors’ Hall of Fame $10,000 for Club Invention Scholastic Games of Lorain County $3,600 for the Scholastic Games Town Hall of Cleveland $10,000 for student scholarships and distance learning
In the area of Health, the Foundation approved $150,000 to the following organizations: Children’s Developmental Center $30,000 for a resource bank Community Health Partners Foundation $50,000 for the rural parish nurse program Echoing Hills Village $15,000 for Camp Echoing Hills Lorain County Free Clinic $35,000 for general operating support Lorain County Health & Dentistry $20,000 for dental care for the uninsured
