Great Grants: Youth Challenge
Beth Maiden
Founded in 1976, Youth Challenge believes that there is an athlete in every child, including those with physical disabilities. The organization provides carefully-adapted activities including bowling, horseback riding, swimming and tennis to children in six counties including Lorain, and free transportation is offered in one of Youth Challenge's wheelchair-accessible vans. On average, Youth Challenge serves 150 children between the ages of two and eighteen annually, and, at the request of participants and their families, they recently added an 18 and Up Club for ages eighteen to twenty-five years.
But Youth Challenge goes beyond serving children with disabilities by engaging teenagers to serve as volunteers. Each participant is paired with youth volunteers aged twelve and older. An adult supervises but allows the bound to grow beyond teen volunteer and teen participant. On average, Youth Challenge manages over 400 teen volunteers who, beyond their hands-on service, also give input into the activities that are offered.
The Foundation has been proud to support Youth Challenge's work in Lorain County, granting over $111,000 since 2001. The Foundation's most recent grant to Youth Challenge was approved in December 2011 and totaled $16,000 for Lorain County programs.
