Great Grants: Veggie U
Beth Maiden
The mission of Veggie U is to promote the well-being of children through a healthy lifestyle. Veggie U is dedicated to the creation and distribution of curricula with a focus on making wise food choices, combating juvenile and adolescent disease, and attaining an understanding of sustainable agriculture. Veggie U accomplishes these goals through a hands-on curriculum for use in the classroom and the development of seminars and outreach programs for food enthusiasts, food service groups and culinary professionals.
The Community Foundation recently approved a grant of $13,200 to Veggie U for the Earth to Table Science Project in Lorain County schools. The Earth to Table kit, targeted for 4th graders, includes materials for the teacher, instructional DVD's and student journals to record lessons learned. The kit has seeds, soil, planting flats, a four foot grow light, containers, a worm farm, and a box of unusual vegetables like blue potatoes for students to sample. The Foundation's grant will go towards the purchase of kits and their refills along with support of the salary of the Education Coordinator. The Foundation is please to assist in bringing Veggie U's well-recognized programs to the children of Lorain County.
