Ninde Collaborative Achieves Overwhelming Success
Beth Maiden
Dick Ninde wanted to help prepare students in Oberlin Schools to apply for and attend college. Because of limited corporate support in Oberlin, the local school district was not assisted by the Access Program, an initiative that offered scholarships, financial aid assistance, and support of the college application process in other districts. Dick and Nan Ninde issued a challenge to the Oberlin community and matched $450,000 raised dollar for dollar to ensure that Oberlin students would receive the Access Program's beneficial services.
Unfortunately, the Access Program closed in 2004. Because the Nindes had established the Fund at The Community Foundation, they were ensured that their wishes would be carried out, regardless of the agency's closing. After hosting town hall meetings and many conversations, the Ninde Collaborative, a partnership between Oberlin City Schools, the Contemporary-Based Writing program at Oberlin College, and the Lorain County Urban League, was formed to serve the local students through 2 components:
1) The Ninde Scholars - Oberlin College students provide tutoring and mentoring to at-risk high school students. 2) Funding was provided for a full-time position split between the Ninde Challenge program and the schools to improve college access.
And - it works! 2011 was the third year that each student graduating from Oberlin High School had been accepted into an educational program beyond high school. This is certainly an achievement for a district like Oberlin's with a high percentage of students coming from low-income homes. Although Dick and Nan Ninde are no longer with us, their legacy will continue forever to benefit the students in Oberlin City Schools.
