Game Club Makes an Impact
Beth Maiden
The Community Foundation proudly and accurately boasts that we were the first in the world to create School Endowment Funds that provide grants that enhance education, way back in 1983. Today, we hold a Fund for each school district in Lorain County, along with two private schools, the Lorain County JVS, and the Educational Service Center. These Funds grants nearly $500,000 annually for everything from field trips to classroom audiovisual tools.
We recently learned of a creative grant awarded by our Wellington Endowment Fund for a Game Club at McCormick Middle School. Teacher Joanna Hornbeck requested and received $750 to implement a fun after school program for children with social and learning disabilities. Because many children with disorders such as autism do not have the social skills to join in with athletics or music programs, they often lack a sense of belonging in school. Ms. Hornbeck created a safe, fun space where kids can just be kids and play games together. One mother writes, "For kids like Jonathan, every day at school, and in life in general, is a struggle to belong. Game Club is a place where they can belong." In this case, $750 seems like a bargain. We thank our endowment fund volunteers and teachers like Joanna Hornbeck for their vision.
