Foundation Board Approves over $500,000 in Grants

The Board of Directors of The Community Foundation of Lorain County approved $506,888 in discretionary grants at their recent meeting. Among the organizations receiving funding are the Lorain County Urban League, receiving $23,000 for a diabetes prevention project, Catholic Charities Services of Lorain County, receiving $35,000 for family night meals, and Save Our Children, receiving $25,000 for an afterschool program. “To say that the need is great is an understatement,” said Brian Frederick, Foundation President and CEO. “However, the Community Foundation, as a permanent endowment, invests for both good and bad economic times, and we have been able to keep our grant making in Lorain County consistent even during this downturn.” The following is a complete list of organizations receiving funding:
Arts and Culture Great Lakes Theater Festival - $25,432 for 2010-2011 education programs in Lorain County. Oberlin Choristers - $10,000 for general operating support. Ohio Dance Theater - $10,000 for general operating support. Slowik Music Institute - $2,200 for Credo Festival Community Service Days. Community-Building Fund for Our Economic Future - $2,500 for regional convening. Legal Aid Society of Cleveland - $15,000 for access to justice for Lorain County residents. Lorain County Heritage, Inc. - $5,500 for the Lorain County Beautiful Awards. Lorain County Metropolitan Park District - $5,000 for the Miller Nature Preserve. Rochester Volunteer Fire Department - $1,649 for a ventilation rescue saw. Western Reserve Land Conservancy - $15,000 for land preservation in Lorain County. Education Atmosphere Adventures - $9,000 for the Atmosphere Adventures program. Cleveland Museum of Natural History - $10,080 for health and natural history outreach education for Lorain County schools. Cuyahoga Valley National Park Association - $22,750 for Lorain and Elyria Schools partnership for 2010 and 2011. Herrick Memorial Library - $5,511 for early literacy and continuing literacy programs. Junior Achievement of Greater Cleveland - $20,000 for K-12 economic education in Lorain County. Lorain City Schools - $25,000 for a collaboration with Ohio Dance Theater. Ohio State University Foundation - $22,950 for a Lorain County 4-H program. Health Cleveland Hearing & Speech Center - $17,500 for Community Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing of Lorain County. Coalition for the Uninsured of Lorain County - $20,000 for the Lorain County Drug Repository. Family Planning Services of Lorain County - $24,000 towards operational support for the medical director. Lorain County Urban League - $23,000 for the Save Our Families diabetes prevention project. Social Services Catholic Charities of Lorain County - $35,000 for Community Connections and family night. Family Promise of Lorain County, Inc. - $25,000 for the Interfaith Hospitality Network of Lorain County. Harrison Cultural Community Centre - $20,000 for general operating support. Lorain County Lutheran Presbyterian Cooperative Ministries - $15,000 for the Caring for Our Community Program: Phase 2. Lorain County Office on Aging - $26,083 for programs for rural seniors. Lutheran Metropolitan Ministry Association - $15,000 for the Volunteer Guardianship Program of Lorain County. Neighborhood House Association of Lorain County - $30,000 for the Haven Center. North Ridgevillle Community Care - $13,500 for program essentials. Save Our Children, Inc. - $25,000 for after school programming. Voices for Children - $10,253 for volunteer recruitment and training. The Community Foundation accepts grant applications from eligible nonprofit organization twice per year on February 1 and July 1.
