A True Believer in The Community Foundation - Dr. Paul J. Kopsch

We at the Foundation are in the people business and consider ourselves fortunate, on most days, to hear that doorbell ring, announcing a visitor.  Dr. Paul Kopsch was truly one of the most interesting characters to come through our door.  Tall and talkative, he always had a story to tell.

Dr. Kopsch was a well-known local physician, former coroner, retired Brigadier General of the US Army, and avid gun enthusiast.  For many years, Dr. Kopsch, a graduate of the Long Island College of Medicine, was the only anesthesiologist practicing between Cleveland and Toledo.

Dr. Kopsch and his wife, Mary, were very early believers in the Foundation.  They created the Mary J. and Paul J. Kopsch Fund in 1981, placing it at the Community Foundation just one year after its inception.  Today, that Fund has awarded generous scholarships to hundreds of local medical students.

Not intent with just one Fund, the Kopsch's created the Challenge for Tomorrow Scholarship in 1992, a lottery designed to encourage academic achievement for City of Lorain students.  Ten scholarships are awarded annually.

We miss Dr. Kopsch's visits.  He passed away last year, but we are humbled to carry the standard for his charitable legacy forever.
