Hunger Continues Past the Holidays
Beth Maiden
The generosity that occurs over the winter holidays tends to overwhelm all of us who work in the nonprofit world. We are always humbled by those who chose to support the work of The Community Foundation and that of the many agencies that we, in turn, support. In 2010, let us remember especially the work of our local organizations who provide emergency food to those most in need. Unfortunately, hunger prevails long past the turkey dinners and holiday food drives.
Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio, serving Crawford, Erie, Huron and Lorain Counties, reports an increase of those seeking help from food pantries in October of over 56% since 2007. During the fiscal year of 2009, Second Harvest will distribute an overwhelming 5.5 million pounds of food, an increase of 71% in just two years. The USDA reports that, in November, 17 million children in the United States were considered food insecure or not having access to regular meals. This is a shocking increase of 36% in just one year.
What can you do? Consider hosting a neighborhood food drive this winter or spring. Volunteer to serve a community meal. Call Second Harvest at 440.960.2265 and offer to help pack food donations. Make it your New Year's Resolution to help fight hunger in our community.
