Youth Fund Project
Carolyn Reisdorff
We began with something that was simple, but would still be very helpful to those that it would go to – creating personal care bags. Each YFAC member put in effort to participate in this project. Like an assembly line, each person contributed to putting these bags together. A bag would go down the line, as someone would put in a different item one person at a time. Toothbrushes, soap, shampoo, hand-sanitizer, and more necessities were included in these care bags. It was great to see so many people come together for something like this. After each person would put in some effort, each bag became something to really help someone who needed it. Not only did we create something together, but we also helped just a little bit to make life a little easier for some people. After this activity, we Youth Fund members went on to do another thing. There were teddy bears, pens, ribbons, and tags, put together as toys for children whose families were going through tough times. Each bear had a ribbon tied in about around its neck with a tag saying its name and something to do which the owner, such as singing a song, playing, telling a story, etc. These bears are to be donated to kids who’d really appreciate it and have something to do with a new friend.
Our final activity of this meeting was watching a video on those who go through homelessness. As we will go on in November to visit a homeless shelter, the purpose of this video was to show us what to expect, how to talk to these people, etc. I think it showed YFAC members that although it may be scary for some people at first, it’s worth it in the end. It also showed that the homeless are people too; they’ve just struggled, been through some tough things, and can use some help.
After beginning this year of the Youth Fund, I am already looking forward to other activities and projects we will all have in the future to help others.
