Main Street Programs as Engines of Economic Development

Did you know that, for every $100 spent at a local, independently owned store, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures?  Mike Eppley, Program Manager for Main Street Wellington explained that shopping and dining at locally-owned establishments can make a difference to the local economy.  "If you spend $100 at a national chain, only $43 stays in the community," said Eppley.  Main Street Programs throughout Lorain County are working to create attractive downtowns and encourage commercial and retail activity that brings people in.  From art festivals to free band concerts, shopping-local campaigns to farmers' markets, Main Streets are finding creative ways to bring people away from the shopping malls and back downtown.

Main Street programs use a four-point approach toward historic and economic redevelopment that has been established by the National Trust for Historic Preservation: organization, design, economic restructuring and promotion.  Main Street Wellington has, in just 10 years, seen over $13.8 million reinvested in that village and has netted 45 new full-time jobs.

The Community Foundation has long been a supporter of Main Street Wellington and Main Street Elyria, investing over $165,000 in grants to support their operations.  You can help support Main Streets as well.  Shop and dine locally, visit one of Lorain County's beautiful downtowns for your purchases, and know that your investment will have a lasting impact and help preserve the local charm that makes our downtown's so unique.
