Marty Kelly is named 2007 Doughman Award Recipient

Marty C. Kelly, Chief Executive Officer of the local Girl Scout Council, was recognized with the 2007 Jim Doughman Community Service Award on June 20 at The Community Foundation's Annual Meeting held at the Spitzer Conference Center in Elyria.  “Marty’s behind-the-scenes leadership and commitment to so many community projects that benefit Lorain County residents both through Girl Scouts and outside of that role made her the perfect candidate for this award,” said Brian Frederick, Community Foundation President and CEO.

Marty began her career in the nonprofit world in 1970 with the Girl Scouts.  At the agency, she has held many different positions including Outdoor Facilities and Program Director before being named Chief Executive Officer in 1995.  Her fellow staff members thought so highly of her that they recommended her for this award including these remarks, “In the course of her career, Marty has worked beside staff and volunteers, never asking anyone to do a job she herself has not already done.  Beyond her job, she has contributed her time and talents to the community through a variety of volunteer endeavors.  She has further contributed to the community by encouraging her staff to volunteer and making time available for them to do so.”

Marty often takes on the rather thankless, behind-the-scenes role in helping support the operations of nonprofit organizations like United Way, Children’s Developmental Center, and Elyria Rotary by helping with strategic planning and board governance issues.  Nominator Joan Lowry said, “I have worked with Marty on numerous occasions where I have personally witnessed her improve the quality of mechanics within the agencies.  Marty has made things happen in Lorain County.”

James C. Doughman began his career with Nordson Corporation in 1966 and in 1976 was promoted as Director of Public Affairs.  Eric Nord said of Jim, “His full time job was to do whatever needed to be done in Lorain County and to promote and coordinate organizations and programs that were helpful to people.”  Jim passed away in December of 1997, ending a long career of nurturing nonprofit organizations and fostering the development of partnership and leadership, including service to The Community Foundation and to many other boards of directors.

In 1998, the Jim Doughman Community Service Award was established at The Community Foundation through the efforts of several individuals close to Jim.  The Fund provides for a biennial award to be presented for an outstanding individuals or organization for exceptional leadership in making a difference in the lives of those who live in Lorain County.  A committee including Jane Doughman, Bill Harper from the Board of Mental Health, Mary Lou Wellman from Catholic Charities, and Sue Dixon selected Marty from a large group of worthy nominees.  Jane Doughman presented the award to Marty, along with a check for $1,000 to the charity of her choice, and was joined by her two sons, Jim, Jr., and Tom.
